Greenland

‘When you’ve seen the world there’s always Greenland’ goes the old travellers’ saying. Greenland’s native name is Kalaallit Nunaat – the Land of People and Greenland is the largest non-continental island on Earth, with the same area as France, Great Britain, Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, and Belgium combined! It has a population of approx. 56,000, which is more than 39 sq.km. per person – the world’s sparsest population!

85% of Greenland is covered by an icecap which holds 10% of the world’s total freshwater reserves. Only 410,449 square km are ice free – equivalent to the British Isles. The icecap is the Arctic’s largest glacial mass, it is over 3km deep and contains ice frozen 120,000 years ago. If the icecap melted the sea level would rise by approximately 5 metres!
